The Labor Link Podcast
The Labor Link Podcast
The Labor Link Podcast is about the brave individuals organizing the workers who make our stuff. Host Judy Gearhart, of the Accountability Research Center, interviews worker organizers about their rights and experiences. They touch on many aspects of the global economy – trade policy, international development programs, corporate accountability, and the international human rights norms meant to protect workers from abuse. But at the end of the day, it’s about workers building power. To do that, these organizers are challenging the policies, programs, and power-holders that limit their ability to organize and bargain collectively for a decent wage and safe working conditions. This second series is on fisher-driven solutions in the seafood industry. We will interview fisher organizers from across the globe to learn how they are overcoming challenges and using innovative and creative strategies to advance fishers’ rights in large- and small-scale fishing sectors. We start with two episodes featuring the Fisher Rights Network, a union of Cambodian and Burmese fishers organizing with support from the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF). In the first episode, Jon Hartaugh from the ITF explains the policy context and describes the tenacity of organizers and why he finds their cause so compelling. In the second episode, we’ll hear directly from FRN organizers who describe the challenges they face and the creativity they use to organize in a sector that has long been seen as unorganizable. The Labor Link comes out of the Accountability Research Center, which brings together activists and researchers to learn from and share the change strategies of community and worker organizers demanding accountability from government and corporate actors. This series is produced by Jules Taylor. For other great podcasts on workers’ rights go to laborradionetwork.org
